Excerpt:
Alexxis’ resistant frame was yanked forward as Odell
pulled her into the brighter light of a nearby lamp. His eyes bucked. Moving closer, he examined the
deep set, dark purple scratches and bruises lining her upper arm and wrist. On the other, he found
more of the same. “Unfasten that shirt,” he ordered. Alexxis hesitated, but his forward
steps brought quick compliance. Slowly, the buttons were undone leaving the shirt opened
down the front. “Ruthy Dee, do you
see this?”
His wife gasped in horror. “Oh my God!”
Odell moved the material aside. It was then that the
bruises about Alexxis' neck, shoulders and chest could be seen. Nearing tears, he pulled the
shirt down, examining her back, cringing from the scratches and discoloration around her bra and waistline. He touched a gentle hand to them, recoiling in his own measure
of pain when she cried out and moved away. “Daddy, you're hurting me.”
Odell let go. Tears welled in Alexxis' eyes as she looked
from one distraught parent to the other. Covering herself with the shirt, she
redid the buttons as quickly as her trembling fingers would allow.
Ruthy Dee was shocked by what she’d seen. “Alexxis!
Baby,
what happened?”
“Mama, please,” she pleaded. “Please don't make me answer
that.”
“You gone
answer some damn body, young lady," Odell blared. "Tonight! |
